Early hybrids bring success to this Eastern Cape farmer

Here are Owen Langheim and Duwal Edwards at a very promising planting of PAN 4P-928PW. Owen farms in the Stutterheim district, located in the Eastern Cape. Duwal, Pannar's agent in East London, says it is a cool area, but despite this, Owen harvested 15 tonnes per hectare from PAN 4R-728BR last year. Owen also achieved 15 tonnes per hectare with a trial planting of PAN 3R-724BR, which was planted at 80,000 plants per hectare. He was so pleased with the results that he is testing the yellow hybrids PAN 3P-924PW, PAN 4P-928PW and PAN 5P-902PW, all with the PowerCore™ technology, under different plant populations this year.

The PowerCore™ technology incorporates three different Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins, for extensive control of targeted above-ground lepidoptera insects. The unique combination of Bt-proteins contained in PowerCore™ technology offers improved Insect Resistant Management (IRM) against Maize Stalk Borer (Busseola fusca) and Spotted Maize Stem Borer (Chilo partellus), while its glyphosate tolerance brings a proven, convenient weed control benefit to farmers.
