Feverishly planting in the vicinity of Ermelo!

By Joe Payne, Pannar Representative, Ermelo, 082 456 8120

It’s great witnessing Pannar’s seed being planted. Jannie van der Meulen, one of Joe Payne's clients near Ermelo, is hard at work this planting season!

One of the keys to successful grain cultivation is the establishment of an optimal plant population. It forms the foundation of a successful harvest. The first step is to calibrate the planter for the specific seed and to check the accuracy of seed spacing regularly. Calibrate and test the plantability of the seed. We strive to establish good contact between the seed, soil, and moisture. Equal spacing in the row, planting depth and pressure wheel adjustment, sets each seed up to develop to its full potential. Beware of planting at a high speed as it is detrimental to the equal spacing of the seed. Avoid planting in too wet soil as it can cause a smear action and compact the soil. Regularly check spacing and depth of seed by opening rows. Be aware of crust formation after a heavy rainstorm and roll harrow the plant rows to break up any crust and aerate the topsoil.
